The Social Security Administration (SSA) classifies disabilities into 14 categories. Included is Section 7.00 – Hematological. This grouping includes only noncancerous disorders, as cancer and cancer-related conditions are evaluated elsewhere.
It’s important to understand that all 14 categories have their own requirements that must be met in order to qualify for disability benefits. Hematological Disorders
The SSA blue book recognizes several blood-related disorders as disabilities, but certain requirements must be met to be approved for benefits. These recognized conditions all behave similarly wherein they cause disruption to normal blood cell development and function. Certain conditions may affect white blood cells, red blood cells, platelets, or clotting proteins.
Hemolytic Anemias
These disorders can be either congenital or acquired, and cause destruction of otherwise healthy red blood cells, bringing the red blood cell count down to dangerous levels. When hemolytic anemia occurs, it can cause exhaustion and shortness of breath.

Disorders of Thrombosis and Hemostasis
These blood clotting and bleeding disorders consist of abnormalities in the blood that cause hypercoagulation or hypocoagulation. These disorders affect a network of tissues and can cause dangerous bleeding episodes that require blood transfusions.

Disorders of Bone Marrow Failure
Failure of bone marrow can cause insufficient amounts of healthy red blood cells, platelets, or granulocytes.
